Meet the Collections and Curators: October is Archives Month

On Thursday, October 18th, the Flagler College Archives hosted Meet the Collections and Curators, which was started in 2015 to raise awareness of the Archives and Special Collections. Every semester the Flagler College community is invited to view an exhibition of highlights from these collections. In this particular event, the focus of the display was Henry Flagler and the Hotel Ponce de Leon, but the purpose of the event was more than showing off the archives historic collections. What made this event unique was it was also an open house to the new home of the Flagler College Archives in L-300 and in ushering in a new era of a more accessible archives. Another milestone of this event is we have had over 500 members of the Flagler College community attend Meet the Collections and Curators since 2015. This event was a success with over 80 attendees in only two hours!

Along with exhibits of photographs and other memorabilia, there were also archives reference books to look at and a trivia game with questions regarding the history of the Hotel Ponce de Leon and Henry Flagler, with all of the answers found throughout the display. The trivia game also included questions about how to use the Flagler College Archives. Raffle tickets were given to all who play, one for participating and three for those who answered correctly. The prizes were kindly donated by our sponsor, the Flagler College Bookstore and included Flagler College gear, a cap, a pennant, a lanyard and a mug. Our winners were Samantha Bolanos, Michelle Canizalez, Daniella Tichenor, and Jessie Hoffman. Congratulations and thank you for playing with us!

If you missed out event, do not fret. Special Collections will be hosting another Meet the Collections and Curators on November 15th in the Alumni House (formerly Anderson Cottage). Feel free to stop by anytime between 2:00 and 4:00 pm. The exhibit is entitled Beautiful Books and will feature over 70 books from Special Collections dating as far back as the 16th Century. As always there will be coffee and treats for our attendees after they view the display and students who attend get co-curricular credit.
